"Darwin believed that Consciousness did exist, but that it could not have any real effect on the world because it was a nonphysical phenomenon and as such could not affect the physical the world. It must be an epiphenomenon because the physical world is causally closed. From an evolutionary point of view, it has no function."

Charles Darwin

Newton believed that, the mind and body didn't exist independently of each other. In other words, the mind and body were not  only causally, but also ontologically, coupled.  He believed that Human minds  only existed in living human bodies, and that human bodies owe their life and motion to the minds with which they are coupled with.
